Medical abortion is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy (less than 10 weeks). It allows you to complete the process at a time and place of your choice. You start with an office visit to confirm how far along the pregnancy is (by ultrasound or Certification of LMP). A simple finger-prick blood test to check for anemia. Physician or NP reviews your medical history and results to ensure the process is safe. The Medication Process: Mifepristone (200 mg): Taken in the office or at a time of your choice. This medication stops the pregnancy from continuing. Misoprostol (4 tablets): Taken 24 to 48 hours later to empty the uterus and complete the process. Zofran (4 mg): Taken as needed to help prevent nausea and vomiting. In some cases, your doctor may recommend misoprostol alone or additional doses, taken by mouth or vaginally. The process may begin after the first pill, but it usually completes after misoprostol. Take a pregnancy test in about 3 weeks to confirm completion.
